Seahouses harbour was once used for the shipment of considerable quantities of corn. During the 1770's the quarrying of limestone and subsequent burning in the still evident lime kilns was an important industry. The closing of the draw kilns in 1860 coincided with the upsurge of the fishing with which Seahouses is perhaps best known - Herring being it's speciality.

This period of Seahouses life brought many benefits. An enlarged harbour a huge visiting herring fleet, 10 herring yards, a railway to carry the herring, and Woodgers kippers. The demise of the herring and other fishings altered the old world 'feel' of the village, but the ever resourceful inhabitants have adapted the situation to cater for the holiday makers and day trippers who are always warmly welcomed.

Situated on the North Northumberland coast and designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (AONB), Seahouses is the ideal seaside village from which to explore the Scottish Borders and the hills and coastline of this magnificent part of England. Be it for a weekend break or extended holiday, you will find plenty to fill your time, or to just relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings of Englands "secret kingdom".

Seahouses boasts a number of restaurants and village Pubs, Shops and Entertainment Arcades, all being just a short walk from anywhere in the village.
